The stele was reassembled from eight fragments found in different sites and years. One of them (ΕΜ 6626) was recovered in 1835 at an unknown site on the Acropolis, one (ΕΜ 6854 α) at the north walls near the Erechtheion, one (ΕΜ 6854 β) in 1857 north of the Propylaia, whereas one (Agora I 2806) was found during the excavations conducted in 1935 on the Athenian Agora.
With this honorary decree, carved in both the Ionic and Attic alphabet, the Athenians bestow the title of ambassador and benefactor on Proxenides from Knidos, a coastal city of western Asia Minor, for the services he provided to Athens.
In the relief, Proxenides stands between Athena, protector of Athens, who is extending her arm to him, and Aphrodite, protector of Knidos, who has placed her hand on his head. Since he is mortal, the honoree is depicted at a smaller scale than the goddesses.
